Natural circumstances of Chejudo Island
![]()
From Halla mountain rising up to 1,950m in the center of the island, there are gentle slopes to east
and west and steep slopes to north & south. Examining the geographical features, the shorelines
which have an area of 55.3% of the island and are under 200m height above the sea level are used for
a residential area, for livestock farm land and for fruit farming; the middle band of the mountain
which is between 200m-500m above sea level is used for a ranch, a tourist resort, and as idle land;
the band of the mountain which is between 500m-1,000m is used for forest and grassland;
and the top area over 1,000m is protected as Halla Mountain National Park.
Cheju has aspects of both the continental and oceanic climates. Surrounded by sea, Halla mountain is in the center of the island, rising 1,950m above sea level. Because an ocean current around the island and the geographical conditions influence the climate,
a wide change of temperature occurs in winter due to the seasonal wind
and downpours in summer are usually caused by high temperature & humidity of the north-pacific air mass.
There is a subtropical distribution of plants caused by the oceanic climate and the subtropical climate,
which are common features of the island. An average temperature of Cheju is 16'C, 1,568mm of rainfall,
3.0m/sec of wind velocity, 49 days of fine weather in Cheju city, 67 days of fine weather in Seogwipo city.
Seogwipo city, located in the southern part of the island, shows relatively a mild climate.
